Carpenter

Position Summary

The Carpenter reports to the Lead Carpenter for day-to-day work instructions and to the Production Manager for career and professional management. The Carpenter collaborates with other carpenters to produce marketable projects on budget, on time, and with the highest level of craftsmanship and quality possible, delivered in an efficient and profitable manner.

Position Details

Responsibilities

  • The Carpenter is responsible for completing the following tasks and activities:

  • To follow established safety rules and regulations and always maintain a safe and clean environment.

  • Remove or demolish designated parts or sections of structures using hand or power tools.

  • Study specifications in blueprints, sketches, construction documents or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.

  • Shape or cut materials to specified measurements using hand or power tools.

  • Select appropriate materials for task according to the blueprints, sketches, construction documents or building plans.

  • Build or repair cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, stairs, mantles and other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using woodworking machines, carpenter's hand tools, and power tools.

  • Install structures and fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, cabinets, molding and trim, or hardware, using carpenter's hand and power tools.

  • Work with or from blueprints, construction documents or instructions from supervisors.

  • Work on top of scaffolding, ladders, and the top beams of buildings.

  • Check work along the way to ensure it's up to code, measurements, and project specifications. Inform supervisors immediately where work does not meet code or specifications.

  • Use levels, rules, laser levels, framing squares, and surveying equipment to ensure everything is level and secure.

  • Create structures for pouring concrete.

  • Erect scaffolding.

  • Move and install machinery.

  • Attend “pre-construction” crew meetings and make yourself familiar with the crew packet, including scope of work, drawings, and specifications for assigned projects.

  • Attend general crew meetings and bring suggestions for company improvement (how to increase efficiency and productivity, timeliness, ways to cut costs, improve customer satisfaction, or any other ideas you may have).

  • Maintain equipment with care and consideration.

  • Train, guide, and mentor Carpenter Apprentices.

Accountability

The Carpenter is accountable for completing the above tasks and activities to the following measurements of success and standards of quality and performance:

Ensure all construction and installations meet or exceed Barnes Custom Builders quality standards.

Ensure all construction and installation work is performed in accordance with project specifications, measurements, drawings, manufacturer’s instructions, or instructions from Lead Carpenters and Project Managers, as appropriate.

Ensure they own or have access to the tools and materials required to perform their responsibilities most efficiently.

Timely, accurate, and complete reporting of time and project progress to Project Manager.

Maintain a professional appearance and follow the company dress code at all times while in the office, at client sites, or while representing Barnes Custom Builders.

While representing Barnes Custom Builders, act in accordance with company values in all decisions and interactions with clients, vendors, partners, staff, or the public.

Authority

The following lists when the Carpenter has the authority to decide without prior approval or notification or when and how authority or notification is needed prior to making a decision:

  • Make day-to-day decisions on layout, material selection, construction methods and workflow in accordance with blueprints, sketches, construction documents, building plans and project budgets.

Skills, Education, and Experience

The following lists the minimum or desired skills, education, and experience required for the role of Carpenter:

  • Ability to read construction documents written in English.

  • 2 or more years of carpentry experience.

  • Has completed continuing education in construction methods and techniques.

  • Solid math skills and the ability to accurately calculate measurements and estimate materials.

  • Able to select and use the appropriate hand and power tools of construction.

  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including able to lift up to 100 pounds.
