Winterizing your Cape Cod Home

Labor Day has passed and soon enough, winter will be here. If you own a vacation home on Cape Cod, now is the time to ensure your home stays safe and secure while you're away.
A little preparation now can save you a lot of trouble later on.
We’ve created a handy checklist to help you winterize your Cape Cod home. Follow the steps below, and you'll be ready for the cold months ahead.
Heating System
Replace furnace filters if needed
If it’s been a while, schedule a professional service / inspection
Set the thermostat to at least 60°F to prevent pipes freezing
Inspect any chimneys or stove pipes for obstructions
Clean out fireplaces or wood stoves from ash and charcoal
Make sure any dampers are closed
Extra Credit: Install a smart thermostat that you can control remotely
Water and Plumbing
Shut off the main water valve
Shut off the water heater and pump
Close inside valves that supply outdoor faucets
Drain all interior faucets and flush toilets
Drain outdoor faucets and showers
Remove and store any hoses, sprinklers, etc.
Extra Credit: Install a smart water sensor to be alerted of leaks
Windows and Doors
Check for rot around the window frames
Inspect glass panes for broken window seals
Install storm windows if you have them
Ensure all access points are locked and secure
Roof and Gutters
Remove leaves and debris from your gutters
Check for proper drainage to avoid potential clogs
Repair any leaks that could cause water damage
Replace loose shingles that may blow off in a storm
General Maintenance
Give your home a deep clean
Test any battery backup or generator systems
Unplug any electronics or appliances that will not be used
Yard Care
Trim branches close to the house
Have an arborist remove any trees that are unhealthy
Store outdoor furniture, grills, etc.
Drain and cover your swimming pool if you have one
